In this highly visible role, you will support the selection, implementation & optimization of manufacturing processes for our legendary soft goods products. You will apply your mechanical engineering experience and work multi-functionally with Product Design Engineering and Industrial Design to assess product features for manufacturability, and recommend capable processes and equipment.
Key Qualifications
MINIUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Proven experience supporting new product launches to mass production from a mechanical, tooling engineering, or product development perspective with a solid understanding of DFM, DOE, GD&T, SPC techniques.
- Ability to work on a variety of components that will be subassemblies or part of main assembly. Examples include being familiar with various hardware including manufacturing and installation, molding, sanding, coating, lasers, robotic fixtures, etc.
- Experience with mechanical fabricated parts, jigs, fixtures, process tooling, and manufacturing processes is required.
- Excellent problem solver, using structured problem solving methodology to assign root cause, plus develop and implement corrective and preventative actions.
- Hardworking and dedicated in working on significant and unique issues where analysis of situation or data requires an evaluation of intangibles.

Description
Process Development:
- Planning, proposing, and helping experiments to produce timely and accurate analyses used to drive design, development, and supply chain decisions.
- Provide assistance in assessing the suitability of a fabrication technology for a given part design. Planning validation exercises to demonstrate initial feasibility as well as manufacturing capability. Analyzing results of validation exercises and provide technical recommendations.
- Reviewing progress of development activities at supplier locations and serve as point of escalation for critical process related issues.
New Product Introduction:
- Acts as supporting engineer to drive process development and capability assessment activities, reviewing part design documentation to ensure alignment with process capability.
- Assigns specific tasks and work with Apple suppliers to support process development and/or data gathering activities. Set clear goals for results and provide timely reviews of performance throughout program.
- Help to establish validation procedures to determine acceptance of tooling into development builds as well as mass production.
Supplier Execution:
- Help to review supplier tool design, process flow, equipment selection, DFM, and DOE proposals. Identify shortfalls and corrective actions to ensure design compliance.
- Work with supplier engineering teams to map out process development exercises, secure resources, and contribute to schedules in line with program goals
- Assess supplier factory readiness (layout, UPH, key stations) for production ramp. Identify potential execution issues and drive provide actions to mitigate risk.
Education
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Mechanical Engineering, Tooling, or Material Science.

Description
- Define best-in-class processes to meet all Apple design and operational requirements.
Develop and document processes including all parameters, consumables and secondary operation requirements to meet defined specifications. - Provide leadership at manufacturing sites during development and product production ramp, and drive engineering issues to resolution.
- Use data to drive process decisions, basic data analysis, DOEs, SPC, etc.
- Identify, research, develop, and qualify premier equipment manufacturers and suppliers.
- Define part tolerance and specifications by demonstrating process capability to Product Designers and Industrial Designers.
- Work with Global Supply Managers to define and establish supply chain requirements using selected equipment and manufacturing suppliers.
- Work with Manufacturing Quality Engineers to work on and close quality issues, drive yield improvement, and ship good parts to downstream supply chain nodes.
- Coordination of activities and direction through clear communication between the Asia and US-based teams, as well as suppliers.
- Lead process development/have expertise in one of the process development areas listed below:
CNC machining - Develop all CNC milling and turning processes. Scope appropriate CNC equipment to be used, develop CNC fixtures, implement touch probing, lead the reduction of cycle time, development of advanced cutters and coatings, High Speed Machining implementation, support the programming and optimization of all CNC-related activities. Own yield improvement actions and process change decisions based on SPC data analysis. - Surface Finishing - Develop new processes in the area of blasting, tumbling, polishing, wet sanding, lapping, anodizing, and PVD. Ensure that quality and yield requirements are met.
- Assembly - Develop all assembly processes. Includes incorporating welding, gluing/adhesives, and mechanical fit based processes. Support qualification of equipment at suppliers, including detailed documentation of process parameters. Own yield improvement actions and process change decisions based on statistical process control (SPC) data analysis. Identify automation opportunities and justify automation projects based on automation line efficiency metrics.
- Glass Processing - Develop all processes for glass scribe/break, grinding, lapping, polishing, chemical strengthening, decoration and functional coatings (with inks, and other thin film deposition techniques etc). Ensure that quality and yield requirements are met.

The CSM team is responsible for helping develop the longer term supply chain strategy of mechanical enclosures as well as collaborating with key partners in our Finance and Operations leadership teams. The CSM team works with our partners in Operations as well as Engineering do develop the best cost strategy and deals to support Apple’s product roadmap. Commercial and Strategy Managers sit at the intersection of Apple's business activities and engineering communities and balance the needs of both groups to ensure successful product launches with competitive costs.
Key Cost and Strategy Manager job responsibilities:
• Maximize strong analytical, financial, and negotiation skills to build out both near and long-term strategies and cost discussions with our manufacturing partners.
